The Finnish Defence Forces and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) have entered into an Implementation Arrangement aimed at cooperation on the potential procurement of tracked armoured personnel carriers.

The agreement, signed on 15 June at the Eurosatory 2026 event in Paris, covers preparation for pre-series procurement and further collaboration on technology relating to the Patria TRACKX tracked vehicle.

Developed under the multinational FAMOUS programme, supported in part by the European Defence Fund (EDF), Patria TRACKX vehicle was first introduced at the DSEI UK event in London in September 2025.

The Patria TRACKX, developed by Finland-based Patria, is designed as an armoured personnel carrier with an empty weight of 12 tonnes and a payload capacity of 3.5 tonnes.

The vehicle is equipped with a 12.7 mm machine gun and is designed for deployment in a variety of operational settings.

According to Patria, TRACKX is intended to replace ageing M113 and MTLB tracked vehicles in Finland and Sweden.

The TRACKX can transport a full crew, with space for ten soldiers in a compartment equipped with blast-attenuating seats. Its two-track design is intended to address the same mobility challenges managed by four-track vehicles while also providing a spacious, high-visibility driver and commander’s compartment.

The collaborative arrangement allows Finland and Sweden to share information during the assessment of pre-series vehicles, though each country will make its own decisions regarding operational suitability and potential later purchases.

The TRACKX is designed to handle a range of demanding environments, including deep snow, marshlands, and desert sand, which Finnish and Swedish officials have highlighted as important for units operating in Arctic and other challenging terrains.

Patria stated that TRACKX combines features found in both wheeled and traditional tracked vehicles.

Patria protected mobility business area executive vice president Jussi Järvinen said: “We at Patria are very pleased to see strong interest in Patria TRACKX from Finland and Sweden, where demanding and Arctic conditions set high requirements that the vehicle is well suited to meet.

“TRACKX is a versatile tracked vehicle designed to operate efficiently in all conditions, combining excellent off-road mobility, situational awareness, a sufficient level of protection and exceptional operational range. Our objective is to bring the tracked vehicle into serial production as early as 2027.”

The Implementation Arrangement, known as the Implementation Arrangement for Common Arctic Mobility (IA CAM), was signed by Finnish Defence Forces, Staff, Armaments and Logistics deputy chief lieutenant general Jari Mikkonen, and FMV Land Systems Department director brigadier general Jonas Lotsne.
