According to Cubic Defense, the new programme is designed to increase training realism, offering more accurate depictions of battlefield effects and interactions, which allow personnel to train in environments closely resembling real combat situations.
In addition, the initiative will support greater integration within live, virtual and constructive (LVC) training environments and is intended to provide flexibility and scalability for different unit sizes and mission requirements.
The modernisation effort will streamline training operations, aiming to reduce operational complexity for army personnel responsible for training, maintenance and system operation.
The system’s data capture and after-action review capabilities are also expected to deliver insights to improve performance and decision-making.
Cubic Defense indicated that this effort, referred to as SIM 2.0, is part of its ongoing work with NATO and allied militaries.
The programme is intended to facilitate a wider range of training scenarios and exercises, while reducing the need for standalone systems in favour of integrated training solutions.
SIM 2.0 incorporates both live and virtual elements, and leverages technology previously developed in partnership with European forces.
Cubic Defense Ground Training vice president and general manager Alicia Combs said: “SIM 2.0 represents the next step in delivering more integrated, flexible, and mission aligned live training with the introduction of SCOPIC and mortars to Italy.
“This agreement reflects a shared vision with the Italian Army to evolve training capabilities that meet today’s operational demands while positioning for future LVC integration and growth.”
Headquartered in San Diago, California, Cubic Defense provides live, virtual and constructive ground training solutions to defence customers including the US and allied nations.
In 2015, Cubic received a supplemental contract win from the Italian Ministry of Defense worth more than $2.6m to enable heightened realism for Italian Army combat training.
