Notably, the number of robotics-related patent applications in the aerospace, defence & security industry was 1,151 in Q3 2023, versus 1,980 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 11% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Hyundai Motor filed the most robotics patents within the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q3 2023. The company filed 32 robotics-related patents in the quarter, compared with 11 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Kia with 30 robotics patent filings, Boeing (22 filings), and Skydio (20 filings) in Q3 2023.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 33% share of total patent filings
The largest share of robotics related patent filings in the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q3 2023 was in the US with 33%, followed by South Korea (17%) and China (15%). The share represented by the US was 9% higher than the 23% share it accounted for in Q2 2023.
