Rheinmetall has received an additional order of 149 mobile rescue stations from the German Federal Armed Forces (Bundeswehr).

Valued at over €500m ($579m), this represents the largest individual order the contractor has received for these medical systems to date.

The latest procurement forms an extension of a framework contract agreed in December 2024, under which Rheinmetall was initially tasked with supplying up to 137 modular rescue stations.

Of those, 10 armoured and six unprotected systems had already been ordered, according to the company.

The current call-off brings the total rescue station order to 165 units, with the cumulative value surpassing €600m.

The contract allows for flexible procurement, enabling further armoured and unarmoured systems to be ordered as required.

The German Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has also arranged for training to be provided for Bundeswehr personnel responsible for operating the new medical stations.

Production of the new batch of rescue stations is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027, Rheinmetall stated.

The mobile rescue stations, part of the Bundeswehr’s Modular Medical Facilities system, are intended to allow for rapid deployment of emergency medical capabilities in the field.

Each rescue station consists of two containers that can function together or independently, with each container equipped with a generator and air conditioning system, enabling autonomous operation for multiple days. If one generator fails, the system can continue to operate using the remaining unit.

According to Rheinmetall, the containers can be set up and dismantled by four personnel in a short time frame.

This approach responds to operational lessons learned from the conflict in Ukraine, where mobility was recognised as a critical requirement for medical support, according to company information.

Inside, the rescue stations include a fully equipped emergency treatment facility and four additional treatment stations. Medical equipment within the units is mounted on Airliner rails, making it adaptable to users’ needs.

The Bundeswehr will receive both protected and unprotected versions of the system. These new modular container-based systems, produced by Rheinmetall Mobile Systeme, replace earlier complex tent-based structures.

In September 2025, BAAINBw and Rheinmetall signed a framework agreement worth over €300m for six highly mobile, protected medical facilities, with an order placed the following month for the Bundeswehr.
