Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has dismissed the country’s Minister of Defence, Mykhailo Fedorov, late on 15 July in an unexpected move as the war against Russia continues in a bloody stalemate.

Taking to social media, Fedorov said it had been a “great honour to serve the Ukrainian people”, listing a string of successes that he and his team achieved during a brief six-month tenure.

Fedorov was widely credited with modernising recruitment and administrative functions as the Minister of Digital Transformation, an emergent key role in Ukrainian governmental circles as the country sought ways from younger generations to find an edge against Russia.

In the six-month as Defence Minister, the 35-year-old Fedorov focussed heavily on the use of drones and autonomous technologies to carry to fight to Russia, a tactic that has been met with some success through the summer months.

Army Technology was on-site with Fedorov in late-2025 in Ukraine, where he toured defence SMEs, which notably centred on drones and uncrewed systems.

The period also witnessed one of the largest drone attacks across Ukraine in the war to that date, as both sides sought to harness the battlefield edge that massed UAVs have in overwhelming local air defences.
