South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace has entered into an agreement with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) to supply the Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher system (MRLS) to Norway’s armed forces.

The deal, signed on 30 January 2026 in Oslo, is valued at approximately $922m. It forms part of Norway’s broader defence acquisition project budgeted at $2bn.

Under the terms of the contract, Hanwha Aerospace will provide 16 Chunmoo launch vehicles, a package of precision-guided missiles, and integrated logistics support.

Hanwha Aerospace president and CEO Jae-il Son and NDMA director general Gro Jære formalised the contract in the presence of government officials from both South Korea and Norway.

The procurement follows almost 10 years of cooperation between Hanwha Aerospace and the Norwegian Armed Forces.

In 2017, Hanwha Aerospace signed a contract to supply Norway with 52 K9 VIDAR self-propelled howitzers and 14 K10 Ammunition Resupply Vehicles.

The company delivered these systems according to schedule. The technical framework and logistical support established for the K9 fleet provided a reference for introducing the Chunmoo MRLS.

For Norwegian operational requirements, Hanwha Aerospace has adjusted the Chunmoo system for use in Arctic conditions, including low temperatures and snowy environments.

The system integrates with Norway’s current defence infrastructure and fire control systems.

In addition to Norway, Chunmoo MRLS users include Republic of Korea, Poland, Estonia, and certain countries in the Middle East. Operators are expected to achieve increased interoperability and share integrated logistics resources under this expanded user group.

Hanwha Aerospace is also planning further cooperation with Norwegian companies through joint development initiatives or local testing activities.

Jae-il Son said: “I believe Norway’s selection of the Chunmoo system is a result of the trust built up through the supply of K9 SPH. We remain committed to contributing to the long-term security of the Nordic region through close cooperation with Norway and further developing our role as a strategic security partner.”

Last September, Hanwha Aerospace secured a third contract from the NDMA to supply 24 additional K9 VIDAR Self-Propelled Howitzers.
