In a deal poised to elevate European air defence capabilities, sensor technology provider HENSOLDT has clinched a near €100m ($108m) contract with Rheinmetall Air Defence. This contract mandates the provision of HENSOLDT’s SPEXER radars for integration into Rheinmetall’s new Skyranger 30 anti-aircraft tanks.

The Skyranger 30 represents a successor to the Gepard FlakPz. The tanks, set to be deployed by German and Austrian military units, will benefit from integrating the SPEXER 2000 radar system. This technology enhances the Skyranger 30 by providing target classification and combat scenarios.

Under the framework agreement established with Rheinmetall Air Defence last year, this order for the SPEXER 2000M 3D MkIII radar shows HENSOLDT’s role as a player in the European defence sector. The SPEXER radars will be instrumental in equipping the new anti-aircraft tanks based on the GTK Boxer for Germany and the Pandur EVO for Austria. Both variants will be outfitted with various munitions, including guided missiles.

Furthermore, Denmark has shown interest in procuring these systems, potentially expanding the radar’s impact across additional European defence forces.

Rheinmetall has previously secured a €30m contract with Hungary to develop a Skyranger 30 turret for the Lynx KF41 Mobile Air Defence Vehicle. Rheinmetall and MBDA have also signed a letter of intent to integrate the Enforcer missile system with the Skyranger 30.

The SPEXER radar family, already part of Germany’s cUAS field camps and high-energy laser defence programmes, continues to be an element in the Bundeswehr’s modern air defence strategy, alongside HENSOLDT’s TRML-4D radar systems.
