Rheinmetall has been awarded a significant framework contract from the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) to supply intercom systems with hearing protection to support tactical communications.
The contract is valid for a term of seven years and has a potential value of up to €400m.

Rheinmetall will be responsible for providing the Bundeswehr with up to 191,000 sets of the specialised intercom with hearing protection function.
According to the company, the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag or Parliament has set certain conditions for the fulfilment of this framework contract project.
A firm order has been placed for 30,000 intercom sets with hearing protection, including connection cables, which is expected to be delivered later this year.
An additional order for 30,000 sets is anticipated for 2025.

Known as”Sprechsatz mit Gehörschutzfunction” (SmG) in German, the intercom system incorporates modern active capsule ear protection.
This technology is designed to reduce hazardous impulse noise while enhancing quieter sounds.
It also includes a microphone that helps facilitate seamless radio communication and is compatible with various radio devices.
The supply package extends beyond the headset, encompassing a wide range of push-to-talk (PTT) buttons and cable sets that can be used for connecting with different radios as well as onboard communication systems.
Compatibility of the SmG with the new combat helmet supplied by Rheinmetall, as well as other Bundeswehr helmet types, has also been assured by the company.
Rheinmetall said that it has also engaged two industry manufacturers, CeoTronics and 3M Peltor, to work as subcontractors for the project.
As the preferred subcontractors, 3M Peltor will supply the ComTac VIII headset to Rheinmetall, while CeoTronics will be required to deliver the CT-Multi PTT 1C and 3C system.
Rheinmetall is also the prime contractor for the System Infantry Soldier of the Future – Expanded System for the Bundeswehr.
In June last year, the Bundeswehr placed a €285m order with Rheinmetall to supply 367 swap-body systems along with 1,830 swap-body platforms.
