Under this order, the company will deliver a total of 250 Abrams M1A2 System Enhanced Package (SEPV3), a modernised configuration of the MBT.

The latest order builds on a previously requested sale by the Polish Government to provide Abrams tanks, as well as related equipment and support.

This $6bn FMS was approved by the US State Department in February this year.

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) noted that the sale of the Abrams MBT will strengthen the capabilities of the Polish Armed Forces to counter existing and future threats.

GDLS global strategy and international business development vice-president Chris Brown said: “We are pleased to have been chosen to provide this critical armoured capability to our allies in Poland.

“The M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams is the most advanced main battle tank in the world, and we look forward to getting it into the hands of Polish soldiers.”

The modernised configuration of GDLS’ M1A2 SEPv3 includes technological advancements in terms of lethality, fire control, communications, reliability, sustainment, and fuel efficiency.

The upgraded version has additional electrical power, which comes from an auxiliary power unit.

It features an ammo data link to interface with advanced ammunition while minimising the overall maintenance strain.

The tank also includes some network upgrades, stronger armour, and can also be adapted for future upgrades.
