Teledyne Technologies’ Teledyne FLIR Defense has secured a new contract, worth up to $500.2m, to deliver advanced thermal imaging systems to the US Army.

The five-year, firm-fixed-price, indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (ID/IQ) contract was awarded through the US Army Contracting Command, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.

As agreed, the company will deliver the thermal imaging systems for the Family of Weapons Sights-Individual (FWS-I) programme.

The FWS-I system is a battery-operated thermal imaging system that can be mounted on different individual weapon systems to offer the soldiers with infrared imagery in all weather and lighting conditions.

The system will also enable the soldiers to see through fog, dust, and smoke.

The FWS-I system sends crosshair and thermal imagery to the Enhanced Night Vision Goggle (ENVG) III, and ENVG-Binoculars, to offer a rapid target acquisition (RTA) capability.

Teledyne Technologies chairman, president and CEO Robert Mehrabian said: “We are very pleased to bring the Family of Weapon Sights-Individual’s next-generation imaging technology to our soldiers on the ground, on the frontlines, where it’s needed most.

“This substantial programme award is a milestone achievement for Teledyne FLIR and a testament to their leadership in thermal imaging for more than 40 years. We look forward to working with the US Army to deliver these important systems to soldiers in the coming years.”

The company will manufacture the FWS-I units at its facilities in Billerica, Massachusetts, and Goleta, California.

Earlier this year, Teledyne FLIR Defence secured a contract to deliver surveillance systems for the Danish Defence Forces.
