The US Department of Defense (DoD) has announced a $150m package as part of the Ukraine security assistance initiative.

Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said that the initiative is aimed at helping Ukraine’s troops preserve the country’s territorial integrity and enhance interoperability with Nato.

Kirby said: “The package includes capabilities such as to counter artillery, radars, counter unmanned aerial systems, and secure communications.

“This package is made possible after the Department of Defense in coordination with the State Department was able to certify that Ukraine has made sufficient progress on defence reforms this year, as required by the National Defense Authorization Act.”

In March this year, the US announced a $125m package for the country. More than $2.5bn has been committed by the US in security assistance to Ukraine since 2014.

The press secretary stated that the US ‘will continue to strengthen our strategic defence partnership, including through the provision of defensive, lethal assistance’.

In April this year, Nato secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg called on Russia to stop provocations and withdraw its troops along Ukraine’s borders.

Earlier this week, US President Joe Biden invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to Washington this summer.

Kirby added: “The department continues to encourage Ukraine to enact reforms that are in line with Nato principles and standards to advance its Euro-Atlantic aspirations.”
