Sikorsky Aircraft has been awarded a contract to enhance survivability and durability of the US Army’s UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters fleet as part of the combat tempered platform demonstration (CTPD) programme.

Under the contract, awarded by the Army Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD), Sikorsky Aircraft will conduct realistic ground and flight tests of advanced technologies already developed by its subsidiary, Sikorsky Innovations, with an aim to demonstrate the solutions advantages as a complete system to the army.

"As Sikorsky modernises the Black Hawk fleet, it is imperative that we continue to develop and integrate the latest technologies into flight solutions that give our soldiers the protection they deserve."

Sikorsky Research and Engineering organisation vice president Mark Miller said the CTPD programme demonstrated the company’s joint efforts with AATD to produce solutions for addressing the toughest challenges faced by soldiers.

"CTPD is truly a capstone project that ties together many lines of technological development and culminates in a series of realistic integrated demonstrations," Miller added.

Sikorsky Innovations vice president Chris Buiten said: "As Sikorsky modernises the Black Hawk fleet and prepares for the joint multirole (JMR) helicopter competition for the future replacement of the fleet, it is imperative that we continue to develop and integrate the latest technologies into flight solutions that give our soldiers the protection they deserve."
