aunav.NEO is an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) robot manufactured by everis Aerospace, Defense and Security (everis ADS), a Spanish developer of robotic solutions for defence and security.

The robot can defuse improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and ammunition in tight spaces such as aircraft, bus, subway aisles, and underground tunnels.

It can also assist the security and armed forces in neutralising chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threats.

everis ADS unveiled aunav.NEO, the world’s first robot equipped with an adaptable geometry system, in September 2020. The robot is manufactured by the company’s facilities in Huesca, Spain.

aunav.NEO design and features

aunav.NEO is the lighter version of the aunav.NEO HD robot. Its structure is made of aeronautical aluminium and high resistance steel alloys. The robot is available in a range of colours based on the customer requirement.

The overall length, width and height of the robot when folded are 81.5cm, 56.4cm and 84.8cm respectively.

aunav.NEO is a demountable robot and can be re-assembled by two people. It can be transported in different vehicles as the arms, flippers and batteries of the system can be easily detached.

The variable geometry system enables the robot to adjust its width from 400mm to 680mm while performing a mission at any given time, environment and situation. The device is installed with plug and play technology and can be integrated and exchanged with different accessories to suit diverse mission requirements.

The mission capabilities of aunav.NEO are further fortified with the attachment of an electric arm which performs threat prevention and neutralisation tasks with a combination of strength and precision.

The arm has a maximum horizontal reach and maximum reach below ground level of 1,800mm and -1,300mm respectively. It can lift up to a maximum weight of 75kg. The device can be integrated with an anti-overturn system, directional two-way audio system, traction system and obstacle collision avoidance system.

The self-stabilisation technology installed in the device will allow it to remain in horizontal position in relation to the ground while moving through stairs, ramps and uneven terrain.

Cameras and defusing equipment

The standard format of the device is fitted with three cameras including two driving cameras and one on the arm gripper. The maximum number of cameras that can be fitted to the device is up to 20.

aunav.NEO is equipped with two disruptors with telemeter, camera, and laser pointer. It is also installed with a shotgun attached with an infrared (IR) camera.

The robot is provided with a firing cable reel.

aunav.NEO navigation and communication systems

The autonomous navigation system allows the robot to operate in both indoors and outdoors and generate 3D maps of the environment. The robot has the capability to return back to the point of recovery, in the event of loss of communication with the control unit.

aunav.NEO can autonomously come out from narrow space by going in reverse direction for up to 15m. It has the capacity to follow any object or person located in front of it.

The communications between the robot and operator are supported by MN-MIMO COFDM radio, Wi-Fi, fibre optic and ethernet channels.

Remote control unit

The device is controlled by the company’s exclusive remote control unit integrating ergonomically distributed buttons and joysticks.

The control unit allows real-time display of output from eight cameras along with a 3D drawing presenting the exact position of each of the robot´s various joints.

It has an operational range between 700m and 3km depending on the geographical location. The compact and light-weight design of the unit ensures high mobility.

Power and performance of aunav.NEO robot

The robot is powered by BB-2590/U rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.

The maximum speed of the device is 5km/h while its endurance is up to five hours. The EOD vehicle can negotiate a slope of 45º depending on the type of surface.
