Germany and Lithuania have agreed to extend their cooperation in the field of military training.

The new agreement was signed by the head of the International Relations and Operations Group Karolis Aleksa on behalf of Lithuania’s Ministry of National Defence and Defence Attaché of Germany Lt Col Konstantin Bellini on behalf of Germany’s Federal Ministry of Defence.

The move will enable Lithuanian forces to attend Bundeswehr’s training events to hone their skills. It will also support in increasing interoperability of the two forces and eventually with Nato.

Germany is one of the key military partners of Lithuania and supports the development of the latter’s defence capabilities by supplying weaponry and military equipment.

Both nations are Nato members.

As an ally, Germany has also deployed its troops in Lithuania’s Rukla region since 2017 for deterrence and defence purposes.

In 2018, a Mechanised Infantry Brigade of the Lithuanian Armed Forces was affiliated to a Bundeswehr to facilitate training opportunities.

Last month, Germany agreed to support design work for new ammunition storage facilities in the military units of Lithuania.

Germany will invest up to €500,000 for the initiative that involves building new ammunition storage facilities in the majority of Lithuanian Armed Forces’ military units.

Furthermore, German company Heckler & Koch received a contract last month to deliver pistols to the Lithuanian Armed Forces. As agreed, the company will deliver SFP9 SF Paddle pistols by next year.
