The US Strategic Command (US Stratcom) has been modernising its capabilities to tackle evolving threats and challenges.

During a press briefing at Pentagon, US Stratcom commander and US Navy Admiral Charles A Richard said this while providing an update on the command’s mission and readiness during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Richard noted that Nuclear Command, Control and Communications Enterprise Center (NC3) is advancing well and will be hosted with the Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2). JADC2 is a system to connect sensors from all of the military services into a single network.

He also added that bomber task force missions are deployed globally to support US allies and other partners.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a section of US Stratcom personnel is working from home. The remote working policy helped staff become proficient in telework and distributed learning system, a system likely to remain in place permanently.

The statement comes as Russia and China have ramped up efforts to enhance their military capabilities.

Richard said: “Our competitors have continued to develop non-strategic and strategic capabilities in an effort to outpace us.

“We are on a trajectory for the first time in our nation’s history to face two peer nuclear-capable competitors who have to be deterred differently, and we’re working very hard to meet that challenge.”

He further added that the two nations are working to strengthen nuclear, space and cyberspace capabilities, as well as upgrade their key weapons systems.

Earlier this month, the US Department of Defense (DoD) published the ‘2020 China Military Power Report’, which stated that China will double its nuclear warhead stockpile over the next decade.

The report estimated that currently, China has 200 nuclear warheads.
