Orbital ATK Defense Systems Group installed the AAR-47 systems with hostile fire indication (HFI) and Symetrics’ ALE-47 countermeasures dispensing system, as well as Southeast Aerospace’s aircraft modification kits.

"This quick turnaround is a testament to the outstanding effort and technical competence of our team."

Orbital ATK Defense Systems Group, Defense Electronic Systems division vice-president and general manager Bill Kasting said: "The knowledge and experience of our team allowed us to rapidly install and integrate the survivability equipment onto the Korean AH-1S helicopters.

"This quick turnaround is a testament to the outstanding effort and technical competence of our team and further demonstrates our commitment to provide our customers with an affordable solution, enhancing the overall effectiveness of their missions."

Claimed to be the only system that integrates missile, laser and hostile fire threat warning into a single platform, the AAR-47 is designed to protect helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft against surface-to-air threats.

It is installed on more than 3,200 fixed and rotary-wing aircraft belonging to the US and its allies worldwide, including the C-5, C-17, C-130, P-3, CH-53/MH-53, CH-46, HH/SH-60, UH-60P, AH-1W/Z, UH-1N/Y and MV-22.

The addition of HFI capability to the AAR-47 is expected to enable military aircrews to detect a wider range of threats, including smaller-calibre weapon fire and rocket-propelled grenades, and quickly respond with countermeasures.

The AN/ALE-47 CMDS, which complements the AAR-47, provides enhanced survivability against surface-to-air and air-to-air missile threats in all environments, by dispensing chaff or flares.
