Luciad, Sc2 Corp and IBM have announced a new partnership to develop social media analytics for US Special Operations Command.

As part of the partnership, the companies will produce a human terrain analysis system (HTAS) that monitors social media feeds for signs of potential conflict.

Luciad CEO Marc Melviez said: “Together, we have created an application capable of analysing masses of rapidly changing data to create a coherent picture for intelligence or business analysts.”

The HTAS will be based on Luciad’s browser and desktop geospatial API’s LuciadRIA and LuciadLightspeed and IBM’s pure application systems and requires minimal user training.

It can be used to analyse sentiment in more than 40 languages and a number emojis, identifying the influencers of mass communication and trace development of trends worldwide, Luciad said in a statement.

The social media analytics command centre facilitates continuous mining of large quantities of data according to user-defined topics.

The data can also be stored locally, automatically enriched and fed into Sc2’s geospatial applications without the need for large teams of analysts.

According to the company, HTAS can also deliver actionable insights for any organisation seeking to navigate and impact on social media on their own terms without employing specialist data scientists or Cloud storage.
