EPVD^® Technology for defence

Our patented Enhanced Physical Vapour Deposition (EPVD^®) process is pioneering when it comes to coating for critical defence applications. Having been awarded several US and International Patents, this technology has been the product of over 30 years of industry and engineering experience.

This is our Toronto manufacturing facility, where we apply our proprietary EPVD® coatings to gun-barrels to enhance defence capabilities and barrel longevity.

EPVD^® is the only industrial innovation globally that substitutes galvanic chrome, offering effective protection for the internal surfaces of cylindrical parts using exclusive alloys. This solution is both environmentally friendly and enhances performance, durability, and protection, while it facilitates a hotter and more energetic operational process, something that Cr plating (using hexavalent chrome) will never attain.

Chrome elimination for modern weapon systems

Traditionally, due to aggressive gun munitions, the inside part of defence weapons systems can easily be subjected to gun fatigue and erosion. The use of Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) has been the legacy choice for ensuring the weapon’s interior is lined with a protective finish that prevents corrosion.

However, government bodies around the world have placed a ban on the use of Cr6+, coming into effect in the next few years. Chrome is a highly hazardous chemical oxide that can be toxic and carcinogenic, and governments increasingly recognise the health risk it poses for humans and the environment. In addition, Cr plating exhibits certain limitations for gun barrels, which affect both performance and durability.

EPVD^® aims to eliminate the use of harmful chemical coating processes by replacing them with bespoke coating alloys that boost gun performance in an environmentally safe way. For example, EPVD^® Air is set to enhance operational excellence when it comes to military aircraft, as well as reduce gun system and aircraft weight. This automatically minimises operational costs.
