Elbit Systems Land and C4I has received a contract to supply advanced systems for the infantry soldiers in the Benelux countries, namely the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxemburg.
Awarded by the Dutch Ministry of Defence, the $150m contract will see Elbit Systems’ subsidiary serve as a prime contractor for the Smart Vest programme.

Smart Vest is a co-operation between the soldier modernisation programmes of the Netherlands’ improved operational soldier system (VOSS), the Belgian soldier transformation (BEST), and Luxemburg’s cooperative modernisation programme of the army for a soldier system (COMPASS).
Elbit Systems president and CEO Bezhalel Machlis said: "The fact that such advanced armies have selected our solutions attests to our technological leadership and to the maturity of our solutions.
"We will welcome domestic Benelux companies to join us in the project in order to strengthen the support for the local customers."
Thales Netherlands has been named as the main sub-contractor. Other local companies will also participate in the project, offering support and immediate response to customer requirements.

Claimed to be the first strategic joint programme of the Benelux countries, Smart Vest will provide ground soldiers with a cutting-edge system that will offer enhance survivability and safety, while increasing their capabilities and effectiveness in the digital battlefield.
According to the company, the systems will be light-weight, modular, and scalable, and are expected to interface with the existing systems used by the countries’ armed forces.
