Italian defence company Leonardo has launched its first virtual exhibition focussing on the naval capabilities for Middle Eastern maritime security. Named “Leonardo Naval Defence for the Middle East – a virtual experience”, the event is the company’s first commercial activity dedicated to maintaining marketing focus on its products and platforms. The virtual event will feature 3D models and videos of Leonardo’s naval capabilities such as its ‘naval cockpit’, advanced combat systems, naval guns, ammunition, targets, missiles, torpedoes, sensor and radar systems, naval helicopters, unmanned platforms and many more technologies.

Israel Aerospace Industries’ (IAI) ELTA has signed a research and development collaboration agreement with Abu-Dhabi-based Group 42 to develop technology solutions to fight the Covid-19 pandemic. Through a video conference call, the partners discussed how to develop new Covid-19-focused systems using AI and other innovative technologies such as lasers and sensors. IAI has been assessing ways to leverage its technological know-how, capabilities and solutions to safeguard Israel and the local healthcare system. It has also teamed up with healthcare and defence parties, the Directorate of Defense Research & Development (DDR&D), and the State Companies Authority.

Bundeswehr, Germany’s armed forces, is studying whether German military sniffers dogs can detect active Covid-19 virus in human saliva. German media company Deutsche Welle reported that the project is being carried out jointly with the University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover, Foundation (TiHo). It involves a range of sniffer dog breeds such as sheepdogs, spaniels and retrievers. The research is being conducted at a German military K9 training centre in the western German town of Ulmen.

India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has built the 1,000-bed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Covid hospital in Delhi in just 12 days. Tata Sons made a major contribution to the project. The 25,000m2 medical facility has 250 ICU beds and is equipped with monitoring equipment and ventilators. It will be maintained by DRDO and operated by a medical team of doctors, nurses and support staff from the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS).
