The US Army has approved a foreign military sale of modernised target acquisition designation sight / pilot night vision sensor (M-TADS / PNVS) systems to the Indian Army.

Under the terms of the $107.8m agreement, Lockheed Martin will provide 23 M-TADS / PNVS systems and spares for India from its facilities in Orlando and Ocala, Florida, US.

The M-TADS / PNVS is an advanced electro-optical fire control system. It is designed to provide Apache attack helicopter pilots with long-range, electro-optical precision engagement and flying targeting capabilities for day, night and adverse-weather missions.

The system also enhances the pilot’s target resolution and situational awareness on the battlefield.

Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control M-TADS / PNVS international and sustainment programs director Mike Taylor said: "Our high-performing, reliable sensor system for the Apache helicopter will give Indian Army aviators the ability to acquire, engage and destroy adversary threats from extended ranges.

"The capability that our sensor provides results in enhanced aircraft survivability, pilot safety and mission success."

Deliveries of the system are expected to take place in 2019.

Used by the US Army since 2005, the system has already proven its capabilities during Afghanistan and Iraq operations.

Lockheed has supplied more than 1,300 M-TADS / PNVS systems and spares to the US Army, and 13 international customers worldwide.

The company recently secured a contract to continue sustainment of the US Army’s AH-64 Apache helicopter M-TADS / PNVS system.

The four-year, performance based logistics (PBL) contract had a maximum potential value of $375m.
