The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has awarded a contract to Saab to continue to provide support and services to the direct fire weapon effects simulator (DFWES) capability for another three years.

Valued at SEK245m ($25.5m), the contract is expected to come into effect later this year.

The contract requires the company to provide support to the UK’s Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) and the Infantry Battle School (IBS), as well as at the UK’s Collective Training Environments in Canada and at Salisbury Plain.

Additionally, Saab supports numerous overseas and multinational exercises.

Saab Dynamics business area training and simulation head Åsa Thegström said: “This new contract, extending the use of the capability, is a proof of the strong relationship between Saab and the British Army, and a renewal of our commitment as a highly trusted complete training provider to a leading military customer.”

The DFWES is a high-fidelity laser based tactical engagement simulation (TES) system that is currently in service with the British Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Marine to support training events.

Using DFWES capability, dismounted and mounted troops will be able to simulate the effects of direct and indirect fire.

According to the company, all weapon systems and vehicles, ranging from small arms through to main battle tanks (MBTs), are simulated and all training data can be gathered to assess performance and enhance learning through an informed after action review (AAR) process.

The system features fully deployable urban, counter-IED and full motion video (FMV) training capabilities, which facilitate realistic and challenging training.

Said to be the only standalone, deployable capability that can support Combined Arms Battle Group training in the UK, DFWES is readily interoperable with other Saab TES users.
