Oshkosh Defense has received orders, worth $258m, from the US Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) to modernise the army's fleet of heavy tactical vehicles.

The orders require the company to carry out recapitalisation work on heavy expanded mobility tactical trucks (HEMTT) and palletised load systems (PLS) that are currently in service with the US Army.

Oshkosh will be responsible for the recapitalisation of 670 vehicles and the production of an additional 356 accompanying trailers.

Oshkosh Defense US Army and Marine Corps programmes vice-president and general manager Patrick Williams said: “Through recapitalisation, heavily operated and utilised vehicles are returned to Oshkosh, stripped to the frame rails and completely rebuilt to like-new condition.

"Through recapitalisation, heavily operated and utilised vehicles are returned to Oshkosh, stripped to the frame rails and completely rebuilt to like-new condition."

“As the original equipment manufacturer, our recapitalisation services offer significant cost savings by returning vintage vehicles to current operational readiness with the same performance and life cycle cost advantages as a new vehicle.”

The assembly of recapitalised vehicles and manufacture of new vehicles will be carried out on the same line, with both undergoing the same extensive performance tests and inspection procedures.

The vehicles will also receive the latest technology and safety upgrades and be delivered with a new bumper-to-bumper warranty, Oshkosh stated.

Part of the army's logistics fleet, the HEMTT has a payload capacity of 13t.

Oshkosh’s latest configuration, the HEMTT A4 vehicle, can travel across adverse environments more efficiently.

The Oshkosh PLS is said to support the army’s distribution and resupply system by loading, unloading and delivering ammunition and other critical battlefield supplies.

Specially designed to load and unload a variety of flat rack or ISO-compatible containers, the PLS has the ability to carry a wide range of cargo.

The army's latest heavy tactical trucks also feature air-conditioned and armour-ready cabs, electrical upgrades, and anti-lock braking to enhance safety.
