Orbital ATK has secured contracts, totalling $53m, from the US Army for large-calibre training ammunition.
The contracts require the company to produce both 120mm and 105mm ammunition types, including new M1002 and M724A2 rounds.

The 120mm training ammunition, which includes the M865 kinetic energy and the M1002 multi-purpose tank training rounds, is used by the Abrams main battle tank.
The 105mm M724A2 is used for crew training on the Stryker Mobile Gun System vehicles.
These training rounds' appearance and ballistic performance is similar to tactical ammunition and they are claimed to provide the warfighter with an affordable, yet realistic training experience.

The deal also includes the recapitalisation of existing M865 and M1002 rounds to extend their service life.
To date, Orbital ATK has delivered close to five million rounds of large-calibre tactical and training tank ammunition to the US Army, the US Marine Corps and allied militaries over the years.
