The US and Ukraine have begun the dismantling of 200 9K72 Scud strategic nuclear missiles decommissioned in 1997 and stored in the Vinnytsia region, the Ukranian Defence Ministry has said.

Over 2,000t of scrap metal would be received after the recycling of missiles, which would be used for the disposal of excess ammunition, the ministry said.

The scrap and recycle programme of Scud missile systems is part of a memorandum of understanding between the Ukrainian Defence Ministry and the US Department of State, which was signed in November 2009.

The $2m project, funded by the US, to eliminate and recycle Scud missile systems is scheduled to complete by the end of 2015, according to the Kyiv Post.

Work is being carried out by Ukraine’s Commonwealth Corporation under the supervision of Global Offshore Projects.
