The US Government has sanctioned military aid to Colombia to help fight against leftist insurgents and other drug-funded illegal armed groups.

The administration has released $30.3m, which had been withheld over human rights concerns, to Colombian armed forces, according to The Associated Press.

The aid will support Colombia’s military aviation, ground and maritime programmes and training for peacekeepers and equipment, US officials said.

Colombia has received more than $6bn in US military and other aid since 2000.
