The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has concluded Operation Catalyst in Iraq, Australian Defence Minister Senator John Faulkner said.

The Australian combat troops deployed in support of Iraqi security forces, contributed to the stabilisation and rehabilitation of Iraq under the Operation Catalyst.

Around 20,000 ADF soldiers served in Iraq as part of the six-year mission that started in 2003.

During Operation Catalyst, Australian personnel trained around 36,000 members of the Iraqi Army, Navy and Marines, including the conduct of specialist training in logistics support, counter insurgency and maritime interception operations in protecting Iraq’s vital offshore resources.

The combat forces that began withdrawing from Iraq in June 2008 had withdrawn completely by 28 July 2009.
