US Soldiers have tested the army’s new M777 howitzers at the Joint Multinational Training Command’s Grafenwoehr Training Area in Bavaria, Germany.

The M777 howitzer is lighter, more accurate and requires fewer crew than the M198 howitzer, which it will replace as the premier weapons system in field artillery.

The M777 maintains five points of contact to the ground for better stability, and weighs only 10,000lb compared to the M198, which has three points of contact and weighs 16,000lb.

Troops from the second Stryker Cavalry Regiment (2SCR) FIRES Squadron participated in the live-fire mission, the first such test operation of the US Army in Europe.

Section chief with the 2SCR Sgt. 1st Class Steven Jarvis said that the lightweight M777 Howitzer is more versatile and can be transported to any location much faster than its predecessor.
