MBDA’s ground-based missile VL MICA has won its first export order, following a worldwide competition launched in 2007.
The short-range air defence system by MBDA – jointly owned by BAE Systems, EADS and Finmeccanica – is a multipurpose missile deployed from a high-performance vertical-launch system.
It is the only missile that can be fitted with either an active or an IR seeker enabling a productive response against saturating attacks in highly critical conditions.
VL MICA is based on a command and coordination centre (tactical operations centre), other vertical-launch vehicles by MBDA as well as a surveillance and acquisition radar.
MBDA started developing the missile in 2005 with funds from French DGA (délégation générale pour l’armement) and support from the French Army.
