German troops in Afghanistan will soon be equipped with state-of-the-art air defence systems for protection against rocket, artillery and mortar attacks.
Düsseldorf-based Rheinmetall Group will supply €110.8m worth of air defence systems to Germany’s Bundeswehr.

Bundeswehr is the first army to get the NBS C-RAM which uses Rheinmetall’s ‘Skyshield’ technology to detect, track and shoot down any incoming projectiles before they can reach their target.
It consists of an operations / fire control centre, two sensor units and six 35mm automatic guns capable of firing 1,000 rounds a minute.
The system has sensor data that provides details of the impact zone and attacker’s location, which will help the base personnel to take appropriate countermeasures.
The system will be particularly useful in areas such as Afghanistan that are notorious for asymmetric threats and where the Bundeswehr bases in Kunduz and Masar-I-Sharif have come under repeated attack.
