The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) will soon unveil the details of a SMS alerts service to warn citizens of incoming missile attacks.
The new system integrates all emergency alerts in Israel into one centralised system and will send alerts in several languages simultaneously to cell phones, television, radio stations, web sites and billboards.
IDF’s Home Front Command will select a specific area and will send a pre-programmed or a free text message to different geographic regions according to the relevant threat.
The system can also be used to notify citizens of natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes.
The $7m application, jointly developed by Israel-based eViglio and Ericsson, is expected to be activated by June 2011, according to Cellular News.
