Leonardo DRS has secured a blanket purchase agreement contract to provide worldwide satellite communications and support to the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM).
With a potential value of up to $977m, the contract for the USSOCOM Deployed Operations telecommunication programme was awarded by the Defense Information Technology Contracting Organization.

Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) received one quotation out of the 39 that were solicited.
The contract includes satellite communications and support for USSOCOM’s headquarters, components and major subordinate units operating globally. The contract can extend up to eight years and work will be performed at USSOCOM headquarters in Florida, US.
Leonardo DRS is required to provide USSOCOM’s Global Access Network (GAN) system, a global commercial satellite communications (COMSATCOM) solution.
The system is engineered to meet USSOCOM’s COMSATCOM needs.

The company noted that the latest contract will allow it to continue to design, manufacture and qualify the worldwide commercial satellite communications system.
Leonardo DRS Global Enterprise Solutions business unit senior vice-president and general manager Dave Fields said: “We are dedicated to delivering a strong, secure and comprehensive technical solution that ensures US Special Operations Forces have connectivity when and where it is required.
“With our deep experience in this programme, we understand our customers’ needs for this unique and critical mission.”
USSOCOM is in need of an integrated satellite and terrestrial telecommunications system to enable distribution of C4I information.
In a statement, Leonardo DRS said: “Network connectivity includes satellite transmission and terrestrial services, which connect communication hubs to deployed communication nodes located in the continental US and outside the continental US in support of deployed special operations forces.”
The contract includes a base period of five years and three one-year option periods.
In June last year, DRS Global Enterprise Solutions won a task order extension to offer continued support for USSOCOM Deployed Operations telecommunication programme.
