Blackned, majority-owned by Rheinmetall, has signed memorandum of understanding with Nokia to develop advanced deployable tactical networks for use by the German defence forces.
The collaboration will see the amalgamation of Nokia’s expertise in 5G technology with Blackned’s proficiency in the digitalisation of defence systems.
The goal is to create advanced tactical communication solutions that ensure secure and dependable connectivity for military operations on the ground.
Both companies have agreed to combine their product and solution offerings to conceive a bespoke communication system.
This system will cater specifically to Germany’s defence requirements while retaining the flexibility to be adapted for international use.
The partnership is set to enhance the Rheinmetall Battlesuite by integrating Nokia’s 5G tactical communications technology with Blackned’s software-based defence solutions, resulting in a seamlessly integrated platform.

By GlobalDataNokia space and defence head Giuseppe Targia said: “In a rapidly evolving tactical environment, speed, mobility, and adaptability are paramount. Through the partnership with Blackned, our 5G technology will empower defence forces to deploy robust communication capabilities swiftly and share intelligence more effectively, providing our customers with a decisive advantage on the battlefield.”
Deployable tactical networks are advanced mobile solutions that can be deployed rapidly and for broadened operational reach. They are engineered to withstand diverse battlefield conditions and deliver consistent connectivity along with high data transmission rates.
These networks support the Software Defined Défense paradigm by enhancing situational awareness, accelerating decision-making processes, and improving coordination of assets.
Blackned CTO Timo Zaiser said: “Blackned is dedicated to advancing innovation in defence digitalisation, and our agreement with Nokia represents an important milestone in that mission. Together, we will provide powerful, flexible, and future-ready tactical network solutions built for the realities of modern defence.”
In January 2025, Rheinmetall Electronics expanded its stake in Blackned by purchasing an additional 11% of shares through a share acquisition agreement, taking its total ownership to 51%.
