Austria-based Schiebel’s Camcopter S-100 unmanned air system (UAS) has participated in an exercise with the Australian Army.

The exercise was carried out for two weeks and demonstrated the UAS’ new capabilities and payloads to the army as part of Project Land 129-3.

During the trials, Camcopter S-100 UAS was incorporated with Elta Systems’ ELK-7065 compact airborne HF COMINT/DF 3D system and Overwatch Imaging’s TK-5 Firewatch.

When integrated with ELK-7065 compact airborne HF COMINT/DF 3D system, the UAS provides high-frequency (HF) communications intelligence (COMINT) capability to the user.

The capability offers quick spectrum exploration, analysis and detection of advanced HF communication signals in real-time.

Schiebel chief technical officer Chris Day said: “The ELK-7065, integrated on the Camcopter S-100 UAS, offers the essential capability of delivering time-critical intelligence in the most complex operational environments.

The combination of TK-5 Firewatch payload and the UAS will address the capability gap between small drone mapping cameras and satellite mapping systems, according to Schiebel.

This payload boosts the UAS’s capability to conduct intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions.

Australian Army Aviation director-general brigadier John Fenwick said: “The lease of the Camcopter S-100 and its advanced payloads is an important activity supporting the army’s understanding of UAS capabilities. We will continue to explore all options to keep the Australian Army at the forefront of new technologies.”

Schiebel’s Camcopter S-100 UAS is a combat-proven military platform with a payload capacity of 75lb. It is designed to provide long endurance for over six hours at a service ceiling of 18,000ft.

The vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) system can operate day and night in any atmospheric conditions on land and at sea with a beyond line-of-sight capability to 200km.

In September, Schiebel established a new company in Australia to support the Pacific region. Schiebel Pacific Pty Ltd (SPL) is intended to serve as the permanent and comprehensive programme, logistics and sales hub.
