Floor mounting of passenger and crew seats is the most efficient and simplest method of vehicle seat attachment, avoiding special brackets and attachments required by other applications. However, designers of armored and mine protected vehicles tend to avoid this approach, preferring more complex, volume consuming attachments to the vehicle walls and roof, to minimize the transfer of high accelerations generated in a blast event.
The general belief is that since mines generally explode under the vehicle, the floor is subjected to the highest accelerations. Indeed, when blast mitigation is required, floor mounting approach poses great challenges to the energy system designer but these obstacles can be overcome with properly designed energy absorbing solutions.
