Notably, the number of metaverse-related patent applications in the aerospace, defence & security industry was 82 in Q3 2023, versus 79 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 43% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Boeing filed the most metaverse patents within the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q3 2023. The company filed 25 metaverse-related patents in the quarter, compared with 6 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Safran with 3 metaverse patent filings, U.S. Department of Defence (3 filings), and State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance (2 filings) in Q3 2023.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 46% share of total patent filings
The largest share of metaverse related patent filings in the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q3 2023 was in the US with 46%, followed by South Korea (11%) and China (10%). The share represented by the US was 0.77% higher than the 46% share it accounted for in Q2 2023.
