US-based electronic systems provider Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) has broken ground on a new aircraft modification and logistics support facility in Huntsville, Alabama.

With operational space covering an area of 60,794ft², the new complex will have the capacity to accommodate up to seven Beechcraft King Air utility aircraft used by the US Army and the US Navy at a time, or multiple rotary-wing aircraft.

Being constructed at Huntsville (HSV) International Airport, the facility will serve as the second aircraft modification hub in the US region.

Once developed, the facility will support the future fixed-wing and rotary-wing programme, including STRATA-G and SNC’s bid for the US Army Logistics Support Facility Management Activity (LSFMA) contract.

The new aircraft upgrade and logistics support complex is expected to be fully operational early next year.

“SNC has a long-standing foothold in Huntsville’s aerospace and defence industry and we are excited to continue expanding our strategic partnerships in the area.”

SNC Integrated Mission Systems (IMS) Business Area executive vice-president Tim Owings said: “SNC has a long-standing foothold in Huntsville’s aerospace and defence industry and we are excited to continue expanding our strategic partnerships in the area.

“This additional aircraft modification and upgrade facility represents SNC’s commitment to our key customers, including US Army aviation and the community as a whole.”

With its completion, the modifications facility is expected to provide the military customers with major services such as new aircraft systems design, upgrade, modernisation and logistics support.

Furthermore, the complex will feature added capability for on-site certification, inspection and certified maintenance of the jets, and will help create a number of additional skilled jobs in Alabama.
