The US Army has awarded a new five-year contract with a ceiling value of $495m to Motorola Solutions for the upgrade and modernisation of the service’s global mission-critical communications network.

Motorola is one of five companies contracted to upgrade communications for the US Army, using the P25 standard.

This will help ensure improved interoperability between devices, increase security and enhance reliability of communications.

Under the indefinite delivery / indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract, the company will be responsible for delivering Land Mobile Radio (LMR) P25 subscriber unit radios to the US Army.

In addition to the radios, Motorola Solutions will provide the army with related accessories, warranty and ancillary services to include installation, programming, training and maintenance.

The current project will enable the company to advance its P25 wireless communications standard in order to create a more efficient critical communications platform across the globe.

The P25 radio solution provided by the company integrate voice and data to offer upgraded features such as group services, advanced text messaging, location awareness and push-to-talk.

Radio verification and encryption offers increased security that helps prevent third parties from accessing conversations involving mission-critical and / or personal information.
