India has successfully carried out test firing of its own-built anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM), according to Ministry of Defence officials.

The flight test was conducted in desert conditions, where the third-generation missile was tested against two tank targets at different ranges and timings, proving its upgraded capability.

Developed by India-based Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Nag ATGM is now ready to be put into service with the Indian Army.

DRDO Missiles and Strategic Systems director-general Dr G Satheesh Reddy said: “With the successful test flights, the technologies pertaining to ATGM to engage targets in different conditions have been established.”

“Following the successful completion of the current flight test, the developmental trials of the Nag missile have been completed.”

The ‘fire-and-forget’ anti-tank missile is one of the five weapon systems built by the DRDO under India’s integrated guided missile development programme (IGMDP), reported ANI.

The other four missile systems developed under the IGMDP include Agni, Akash, Trishul and Prithvi.

Following the successful completion of the current flight test, the developmental trials of the Nag missile have been completed.

In September last year, DRDO test fired the Nag missile twice against two different targets in the ranges of Rajasthan, India.

Designed to support the Indian Army’s mechanised infantry and airborne forces, the 43kg, 1.85m-long missile has a 0.20m diameter, a 0.4m wingspan, and is equipped with four foldable wings.
