Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace is developing a technology roadmap to upgrade its XM914 30mm x 113mm remote weapon station (RWS) in line with the common remotely operated weapon station (CROWS) for the US Army.

More than 12,000 CROWS systems that are already in the US Army inventory will be upgraded, under the previously awarded Technology Refresh programme.

The CROWS XM914 system has similar features to many major components and sub-systems of CROWS. It will use technology from Kongsberg’s Medium Caliber Turret 30mm x 173mm system.

“Not only will this provide a path for capability growth of the XM914, it will show tremendous cost savings by deriving improvements from a much larger pool of systems.”

It will also benefit from the CROWS technical data package licensed to the US Government and the expansive CROWS supply chain, Kongsberg stated.

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace executive vice-president Paal Bratlie said: “There is a benefit of such a decision for the army. Not only will this provide a path for capability growth of the XM914, it will show tremendous cost savings by deriving improvements from a much larger pool of systems.”

Bratlie added: “Kongsberg’s offering for 30mm x 113mm is the only industry offering that can utilise such a broad base of technology, logistics and sustainment investment.
