L3Harris Technologies has opened a new solid rocket motor production facility in Camden, Arkansas, designed to double the company’s existing capacity and support the US Army’s Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS).

The facility consolidates production of the motors used to power the surface-to-surface precision-fire system.

Additional propellant-processing facilities at the site will also support GMLRS production, the company said in a 20 October release.

The expansion forms part of a $216m cooperative agreement signed with the Department of War in 2023 to increase output of tactical missile systems, including Javelin, Stinger and GMLRS.

The agreement, made under the Defense Production Act’s Title III programme, also covers new facilities at L3Harris sites in Camden and Orange County, Virginia, as well as equipment and digital upgrades at its Huntsville, Alabama, operations.

L3Harris Missile Solutions president Ken Bedingfield said: “The opening of this state-of-the-art facility marks a major step forward in strengthening the solid rocket motor industrial base our nation and its allies urgently need.”

The company is carrying out further expansion work in Camden, including the Arkansas Advanced Propulsion Facilities and two facilities intended to support production of propulsion systems for the US Army’s PAC-3 programme.

In June, L3Harris broke ground on two buildings at the Arkansas Advanced Propulsion Facilities campus. The company said the buildings would increase production capabilities for PAC-3 propulsion systems.

L3Harris also said it was investing across Arkansas, California, Virginia and Alabama, with plans to build about 60 facilities and introduce new equipment and processes.
