Oshkosh Defense has received a contract from the US Army to supply 97 additional Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) A2 Low-Velocity Airdrop (LVAD) cargo trucks in both 6×6 and 4×4 configurations.
The deal also includes Arctic kits, intended to support operations in cold environments as the US Army continues its focus on Arctic readiness.

The FMTV A2 LVAD vehicles will be used by Mobile Brigade Combat Teams (MBCTs) to maintain logistics, mobility, and supply during missions.
These vehicles are designed for rapid airdrop deployment of equipment, supplies, and sustainment directly into contested or infrastructure-limited areas, supporting extended operational capabilities for MBCTs.
Testing of the 6×6 Cargo variant began in 2023 with validation activities such as Rollover Protection Structures, rigging exercises, roller loading, and simulated airdrop impact tests.
The 6×6 model was the first to complete successful airdrop testing in 2024.

By GlobalDataThe 4×4 variant commenced its trials in mid-2024 and achieved three consecutive successful airdrops at the US Army Yuma Proving Grounds in Arizona in early 2025.
Oshkosh Defense stated that these LVAD cargo variants have demonstrated consistent performance and reliability under low-velocity airdrop conditions.
Oshkosh Defense chief programmes officer Pat Williams said: “The FMTV A2 LVAD closes a known gap in mobility for airborne forces. It enables accelerated logistics and manoeuvre support where traditional resupply isn’t possible, extending the reach and effectiveness of forces at the tactical edge.”
This latest award aligns with the US Army’s plan to modernise its LVAD fleet with capabilities that are updated based on ongoing soldier feedback and iterative improvements.
The FMTV A2 LVAD platform is part of efforts to ensure that MBCTs receive enhancements at a pace matched to evolving operational requirements.
In August 2023, Oshkosh Defense announced a $201m contract to deliver FMTV A2 to the US Army.
In addition, last year the company secured $167m in orders for Family of Heavy Tactical Vehicles (FHTV), covering delivery of 225 trucks and 54 trailers.
Arctic operations have come under renewed focus in recent weeks following intense pressure from the US administration on its desire to acquire Greenland from fellow Nato member Denmark.
