KNL, a Finnish software-defined radio maker, is joining forces with British engineering services company Babcock to advance communication technologies for global defence markets.
In this connection, the parties have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

This MoU combines Babcock’s strategic communication and systems integration capabilities with KNL’s wideband high-frequency (HF) technology.
It will focus on providing “next generation” HF communication support across land, sea, and air domains for armed forces.
The objective is to deliver robust, secure, and resilient communications suitable for challenging mission-critical environments.

By GlobalDataPreviously, KNL and Babcock demonstrated their joint capabilities at the British Army’s Army Warfighting Experiment’s Distinguished Visitors’ Day.
They showcased an HF communications solution that uses wideband high-frequency beyond line-of-sight technology to connect dispersed user groups. The solution also transmits situational awareness as well as intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance data.
Babcock Mission Systems business, sense and connect managing director Matt Taylor said: “We have a longstanding association with KNL, and this collaboration underlines our intent to deliver technology-led, innovative solutions through our growing relationship.”
This agreement follows significant developments for KNL, including a recent NORDEFCO framework agreement pertaining to tactical communications and command & control systems.
The framework agreement, which was signed with the Finnish Defence Forces and Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), spans from 2025 to 2035.
Additionally, KNL had secured a joint procurement order valued at €15m ($17m) for Cognitive Networked HF Manpack radios from the two defence agencies.
