The UK’s defence sector has marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of a new BAE Systems factory dedicated to artillery howitzer production.
Opened by Defence Secretary John Healey, the facility in Sheffield is set to become a cornerstone of the nation’s defence manufacturing capabilities.

The factory’s establishment follows successful export deals worth more than £25m ($33.8m), reflecting the British defence industry’s global reputation for excellence in design and engineering.
Aligning with the Government’s Strategic Defence Review (SDR), the factory provides apprenticeships and supports 60 businesses within the UK supply chain.
The SDR recently confirmed a £6bn investment in munitions production, including £1.5bn for an ‘always on’ munitions pipeline and the creation of at least six new energetics and munitions factories.
Healey emphasised the strategic importance of the new facility, stating, “This new factory is a big boost for South Yorkshire and a significant step forward in strengthening our British defence industrial base. This is a vote of confidence in our world-leading defence sector and good, skilled British jobs, underpinned by this government’s Plan for Change.”

By GlobalDataSpanning 94,000ft², the facility is tasked with manufacturing the M777, the only combat-proven 155mm lightweight howitzer in the world.
This investment also supports the UK’s efforts in assisting Ukraine, with BAE Systems being contracted earlier this year to supply 150 artillery barrels, in collaboration with Sheffield Forgemasters.
Set to be fully operational later in 2025, the factory will initially concentrate on producing the M777 howitzer, with plans to expand its production capabilities. It will also develop and manufacture a range of world-class combat systems.
BAE Systems Weapons Systems UK managing director John Borton said: “Our significant investment adds to Sheffield’s rich manufacturing history and reputation as an industrial powerhouse and will develop a highly skilled workforce in the local area, while also forming an important part of the UK’s critical defence infrastructure.”
