Spanish defence company Indra has completed successful tests of its Nemus radar system, designed to provide active protection against drones and projectiles.

These trials were conducted on Leopard battle tanks at the Spanish Army’s Armoured Units Instruction Centre (CENAD) in Zaragoza.

The objective was to verify the compatibility of the Nemus radar with the Leopard platform.

It follows previous tests conducted in July 2024 at the Army’s Radio Evaluation and Experimentation Centre (CEAR) in Guadalajara.

Said to be the most advanced of its class in Europe, the Nemus lightweight active electronically scanned array (AESA) electronic scanning radar is designed for mechanised vehicles and tanks.

It is capable of detecting, identifying and tracking drones, micro-drones, and various projectiles, including anti-tank missiles, grenade launchers and high-speed arrow-type munitions. The system activates appropriate countermeasures to neutralise incoming threats.

Designed to resist jamming and identify false targets, Nemus also maintains performance in adverse weather conditions, including high humidity and extreme temperatures.

Developed by Indra, this technology is considered crucial for maintaining the operational sovereignty and independence of European military forces.

The company explains that the contemporary battlefield environment often involves extensive deployment of cost-effective drones that pose significant risks to valuable assets like the Leopard tanks. The integration of Nemus radar aims to mitigate such threats.

Indra says that it has expanded its presence in the land systems sector through its acquisition of a majority stake in Tess Defence, the growth of its Indra Land Vehicles subsidiary, and partnerships with defence industry firms.

Earlier in May 2025, Indra and Rheinmetall Landsysteme signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on armoured vehicle programmes for the Spanish Armed Forces.

This follows a prior agreement with Rheinmetall Electronics related to the Leopard 2E combat system.
