The Australian Army’s UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters have achieved initial operating capability (IOC), marking a significant milestone in the country’s defence strategy.
The announcement comes 15 months after the first three aircraft started flight operations in 2023.

The IOC achievement follows extensive testing, evaluation, and training, along with the launch of a fleet support and maintenance system.
With 12 Black Hawks now operational, the fleet is set to support counter-terrorism efforts and fill gaps left by the phased withdrawal of the MRH-90 Taipan medium-lift multi-role helicopters.
The acquisition of the aircraft from the US is expected to enhance the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) battlefield aviation capability.
The initial deliveries included maintenance and aircrew training simulators, as well as advanced communication and navigation systems.

In 2023, the Australian Government confirmed procurement of a total of 40 UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters for the ADF via the US Government foreign military sales programme.
Deliveries of all the 40 aircraft are planned to be completed by 2030.
Lockheed Martin Australia is collaborating with the ADF under an integrated support contract signed last February to develop a domestic maintenance, repair, and overhaul network.
The Army will continue refining the Black Hawk’s capabilities to meet broader defence requirements, including land, amphibious, and special operations missions.
The fleet will be based at Oakey, Queensland, and Holsworthy, New South Wales.
