The Finnish Defence Forces has revealed plans to procure a new modular 120mm mortar system from Patria, which is designed to enhance mobility and flexibility on the battlefield.

This procurement includes a pre-series of the system, which is slated for delivery to the Finnish Army in 2025. The Finnish Army refers to the project as the 120 KRH M3 mortar system.

The Patria TREMOS mortar system, developed in collaboration with the Finnish Defence Forces, was showcased at the Future Mortar Systems conference held in London.

This system integrates traditional heavy mortar weapons into a modular carriage, which is then mounted on a military truck, and can be adapted for use on different vehicles.

Patria Finland Division executive vice-president Jussi Järvinen said: “Patria has enhanced the mobility of heavy mortars in excellent collaboration with the Finnish Army and the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command, creating a new weapon system. It has already undergone testing, and the pre-series agreement was promptly signed.

“Decades of experience in developing and manufacturing different weapon systems, such as the Patria AMOS and Patria NEMO mortar systems, have been applied in this development.”

The Patria TREMOS system supports both existing and new heavy mortars, as well as the current fire management system.

It is able to open fire within 60 seconds of arriving at a firing position and can leave immediately after firing the last round.

The system’s recoil mechanism reduces launch stresses, negating the need for ground support and facilitating a swift exit from the firing position.

Furthermore, the Patria TREMOS can carry all necessary ammunition types and operate independently or as part of a larger mobile firing unit.

Compatible with all qualified 120mm and 81mm smoothbore mortar ammunitions, it features a quick and easy integration module that connects to various vehicle types, including 4×4, 6×6, 8×8, and light tracked vehicles.

In 2023, Patria Group reported growth in its order stock, attributed to the success of its vehicle programmes.

However, the company faced challenges in the first half of 2023, with delays in key delivery agreements impacting net sales and profitability.
