US company iRobot has unveiled a military robot it says will soon be able to travel a four-minute mile.

The 250lbs iRobot Warrior X700 can carry a 500lbs payload, lift 150lbs with its arm and move at ten miles per hour.

The robot is being built to handle a machine gun, 40mm explosive rounds or a multi-barrel 16 round-per-second gun, produced by Australian company Metal Storm.

iRobot chairman Helen Greiner says the robot will be useful in urban warfare environments, as it is the largest vehicle that can go into a building.

“We really think of it as a multimission platform,” Greiner says.

“It can be deploying weapons systems, doing re-supply operations, taking ammo or water to troops who are pinned down, perimeter security and building clearing.”
