Thales UK has won a £30m contract to supply the latest version of its Joint-Target Acquisition System (J-TAS) to meet the UK Ministry of Defence’s Surveillance System and Range Finding (SSARF) requirement.

The 700 systems will provide troops in the field with an ultra lightweight, compact, multi-role, night vision target locator capability.

J-TAS combines daylight and thermal vision with eye-safe laser range finding, embedded military GPS and azimuth angular referencing.

The systems, with a range of 5km, are expected to enter service in 2009.
