The Canadian Army has tested out a new light armoured vehicle (LAV), built to provide enhanced protection against improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The latest varaint of LAV remote weapons station (RWS) will be deployed to Afghanistan for the provincial reconstruction team (PRT), a unit working to support reconstruction efforts in unstable states.
This LAV RWS will replace the Bison vehicle and will carry either a .50-calibre heavy machine gun or a C6 general purpose machine gun, both of which can be fired from inside the vehicle.
The vehicle’s weapon systems are controlled with what looks like a video game station, consisting of four computer monitors, one each for the gunner, commander, driver and crew in the back.
The LAV RWS also features an up-armour package, eight mounted smoke launchers, front and rear cameras, mounted wire cutters and a new interior.
